AbstractBiofilms are ubiquitous in nature and medical sciences. They are made up of live bacteria, extra-cellular polymeric substances (EPS), and water.In this talk, I will discuss a mathematical modeling paradigm where we apply one-fluid multicomponent formulation to develop complex fluid mixture model to describe biofilm growth dynamics and biofilm host fluid matrix interaction. In addition to the material mixing and hydrodynamic interaction among the components of the material mixture system, we will also address the cell-cell communication mechanism known as quorum sensing as well as cell motility. 3-D numerical simulations for various biofilm fluid interaction will be discussed as well.
